A Christmas Story When I was young our family always went to my Grandmothers on Christmas Eve. Grandma Stanwick lived above a Jewish Synagogue in a very modest area of New York that was referred to as Jewtown in Middle Village N.Y. Part of the rental agreement was that Grandma would maintain the coal furnace for heat and hot water and would turn the lights on and off for the MEN when they came to pray. I remember helping Grandma put the coal in the furnace. Grandma was a very proud Polish Catholic lady and we all loved her very much. We had to be very quiet when we went to Grandma’s until the MEN finished praying and left for the evening. That’s when the parties would start. My Uncles and my Father knew how to get a party going. Before Christmas my Aunts and Uncles would pick the name of one child and buy a present for that one child. We always received two presents because Grandma always made us new pajamas. She could really sew. Well, the well awaited present giving time finally came and the children were all excited which was always added to by Uncle Andy and Uncle Mike. One by one the children were getting presents then Cousin Alfred got the biggest and best toy fire truck I had ever seen. The ladders even went up and down, WOW. Of course I tried to touch it but Alfred yelled, DONT TOUCH MY FIRE TRUCK! He was bigger then me so I unhappily went back to waiting for my present. One by one the presents were given out until there were NONE left. As a tear escaped, I said in a very small voice “what about me” Then Uncle Mike (the big tease) said “I think I saw something for Denny out in the hallway. When he returned he was carrying a big box. When he put it on the floor I looked in and saw THE CUTEST AND BEST PUPPY IN THE WHOLE WORLD. Everyone wanted to pet him but I told Alfred “DONT TOUCH MY DOG”. What a great Christmas
