A Christmas message from our Advisory Boards member, Mr.Sam L. Sullins. December 22, 2014 Senator Cam Ward Chairperson Senate Judiciary Committee Dear Senator Ward, How many Christmases did Walter McMillian miss? Many people would say, zero if he was alive, but Christmas is more than just being alive on December 25th. Christmas is the participatory activity that brings one closer to family, friends, and Jesus. While in prison, Walter McMillian received none of this life sharing, life growing activities that are so very relevant and pertinent to physical, emotional, and spiritual growth. He was dead long before he died. The local police and sheriff’s office and the prosecutor took away his Christmas celebrations through lies, hiding exculpatory evidence that had never been disclosed, police abuses of power, and knowing Ralph Myers lied through the trial. They also had no physical evidence linking Mr. McMillian to the crime; they had no motive; they had no witnesses to the crime; in essence, they had nothing. They wanted too win at whatever cost to enable the community to be happy a person was tried and found guilty, and all the elected individuals associated with the case would be elected again at the next election - all at the expense of Walter McMillian’s life and his Christmas celebrations. For years, Mr. McMillian could not attend church services and Christmas ceremonies at his church. He could not listen to Christmas carols, or watch any Christmas oriented TV shows or movies. He received not one card or document concerning the real meaning of Christmas. His life was truly a void in regard to Christmas activities associated with Jesus. He may have had a bible and was able to read the birth stories, but I doubt even that. How many other individuals on death row are experiencing nothing with respect to Christmas? Probably all 193 of them have no exposure. And, how many of the 193 are as innocent as Walter McMillion? I’m sure there are several. I hope you have a fantastic Jesus related Christmas - not a Santa Claus Christmas but a Jesus Christmas. In 2015, please work hard to get those innocent prisoners out of prison before their next Christmas and abolish the death penalty forever. Have a great Christmas with family, friends, and your church. Sincerely, Sam L. Sullins 502 Cole Dr. Huntsville, AL 35802
