A Clash Of Titans – Manchester United vs Liverpool December 11, 2014 It’s the Derby of all Derby’s in the Premier League this weekend. The Red Devils versus the Scousers. The two biggest heavyweights in English football. It’s Manchester United versus Liverpool…what a spectacle. A rejuvinated Man United will be locking horns with a down and out Liverpool side on Sunday at Old Trafford and we’re in for a very exciting game. Man United have won five games on the bounce, seeing them shoot up the table to third place, eight points behind leaders Chelsea. Despite their less than impressive performances, United fans are glad to see that their flying Dutchman, Robin Van Persie has rediscovered his goalscoring form of late since being publicly criticised by manager Louis van Gaal. Van Persie came to the rescue on Monday night against Southampton and stole all three points and he will be looking to put Liverpool to the sword this Sunday also. Van Persie and co. will be looking for revenge at Old Trafford having been humiliated by their Scouse opponents 3-0 last March. United were not even a shadow of their former selves that day and Liverpool absolutely played them off the park. Could we be in store for a twist in fortunes? Having beaten Man United last March, Liverpool began to believe that the league was in touching distance. Man united players and fans have never been so humiliated before with their lackluster performance that saw their season go from bad to worse. Nine months on, it looks as though the tables have turned. Having crashed out of the Champions League, Liverpool’s cofidence will now be at an all time low. Sitting ninth in the table and six points behind West Ham in fourth spot, they have not performed anything close to the standard they set in the 2013/14 campaign. Manchester United will be looking to capitalise on Liverpool’s poor run of form and will be looking to humiliate them even further. Although United’s performances have not been the best, they still are getting the right results which is the most important thing at the end of the 90 minutes. Playing badly and still winning vital points is a true mark of champions and it goes to show that whatever Van Gaal is doing is indeed working. He is still looking for more out of his players and it will come gradually once everybody is fighting fit. The return of Michael Carrick in central midfield has helped a great deal. His decisive positional play and his range of passes have proved crucial in Man United’s recent run of good results. He has helped to create goals and protect the back line. He will have a big part to play on Sunday. Liverpool however, are still struggling to find a source for their goals. Having drawn 0-0 with Sunderland at Anfield, some are questioning where the goals will come from. With Mario Balotelli and Daniel Sturridge still injured, Rickie Lambert has been handed the burden of leading the line. Fabio Borini however, has been cast into the dark for reasons unknown and he could possibly play a key part in this crunch match. With a heroic display from captain Steven Gerrard against Basel, can the 34-year-old veteran be the answer to Liverpool’s problems? Even at 34, he still showed some magic pieces of play that show he still is up for the fight. It will be an exciting clash of two sleeping giants on Sunday. A match both teams are desperate to win to get the Christmas period off to a good start. Expect a heated atmosphere and an electrifying game.
