But of all the various instances of his goodness, the greatest of all, excepting only his Heavenly Grace, is the many kind friends with whom a gracious Providence has blessed me. Oh remember, my dearest boy, to form friendships with those only who love and serve God, and when once you have formed them, then preserve them as the most valuable of all possessions. FOR MEDITATION: Wilberforce knew profoundly what a gift fellowship was, and in particular the blessing of friends who had ‘been kind to me beyond a brother’s kindness, and I think of it often with wonder as well as with humiliation and gratitude’. These were words he wrote in a letter to James Stephen, which continued: ‘Indeed I have long thought that of all the manifold blessings which Providence has heaped on me, the greatest of this world consists of kind and intelligent friends whom he has raised up for my comfort and benefit.’ Mention has already been made of the comfort and encouragement Wilberforce received from his close friends, but he also was able to consult with them on weighty matters, and at times receive constructive criticism from them—for he valued very highly, as they did, friendly reproof when warranted. We all need friends like this—who will come alongside us in our life’s journey. They are friends of the heart, who help us in many ways to chart our course during our earthly pilgrimage. Blessed are those who have such friends in their life.
