A & G - I pray you rest well and breathe deep, knowing this day has begun and ended in Christ . . . Evening/Night Prayer (The Divine Hours) The Call to Prayer Sing to the Lord, you servants of his; give thanks for the remembrance of his holiness. For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye, his favor for a lifetime. - Psalm 30:4-5 The Request for Presence Show us the light of your countenance, O God, and come to us. - based on Psalm 67:1 The Refrain for Vespers Righteousness shall go before him, and peace shall be a pathway for his feet. - Psalm 85:13 The Vespers Psalm But I will call upon God, and the Lord will deliver me. In the evening, in the morning, and at noonday, I will complain and lament, and he will hear my voice. He will bring me safely back from the battle waged against me; for there are many who fight me. God, who is enthroned of old, will hear me . . . Cast your burden upon the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous stumble. - Psalm 55:17-20, 24 The Refrain Righteousness shall go before him, and peace shall be a pathway for his feet. A Reading There is no greater proof in the world of our spiritual danger than the reluctance which most people always have and all people sometimes have to pray; so weary of their length, so glad when they are done, so clever to excuse and neglect their opportunity. Yet prayer is nothing but desiring God to give us the greatest and best things we can have and that can make us happy. It is a work so easy, so honorable, and to so great a purpose, that (except in the incarnation of His Son) God has never given us a greater argument of His willingness to have us saved and our unwillingness to accept it, of His goodness and our gracelessness, of His infinite condescension and our folly, than by rewarding so easy a duty with such great blessings. - Jeremy Taylor The Psalm O Lord, you are my shepherd; I shall not want. You make me lie down in green pastures; You lead me beside still waters. You restore my soul; You lead me in paths of righteousness for your names sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil; for you are with me; Your rod and your staff - they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. And I shall dwell in your house, O Lord, my whole life long. Intercessions (Daily Prayer) You know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: have compassion on our weakness, we pray, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask. Amen. The Blessing Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God - Creator, Redeemer, and Giver of Life. May the Lord be with us, may the holy angels brings us peace, and may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be always with us. Amen.
