A GOLDEN RETRIEVER WITH HOOVES Years ago, Gypsy Gold coined the phrase above comparing the Gypsies Vanner Horse with Golden Retrievers. We did because my late wife Cindy and I had never experienced a horse breed, quite so companion like. Over the years I have come to associate their wonderful temperament with the look and genetics that created the Vanner breed (all hairy legged horses) Because all hairy legged horses came from, The Forest Horse, the prehistoric originator of all Draft Horses, the Vanner breeds gentleness can at least in part be associated with its profuse hair. That is my theory but it is theory based on genetic/scientific fact. The look of the breed intended is often a predictor of the Golden Retriever temperament desired. Approximately 80 % of the horses raised by British Gypsies in 1995 were of unknown heritage and have smooth legged genetics in their background, often Connamara or Irish Draft. That is why there is a breed and a type(non-breed) of horse that British Gypsies raise, hence the importance of a name that differentiates the two. There is another theory I have that is not associated with genetics which I will share in the next post.
