A GOOD READ - An open letter to the MMA community: Former UFC Champion Carlos Ronin Newton is the real whistleblower in the anti-trust case against the UFC/Zuffa. His name was taken off as the main plaintiff at the 11th hour by lawyers who believed they had a stronger legal position based on case law with an active fighter (Cung Le) who also resides within the jurisdiction of the court where the lawsuit is filed. This case is a VERY BIG DEAL and is being handled by the strongest anti-trust legal teams in the U.S.--the UFC has a legit problem. The history books should show that Carlos was the one and only fighter who did the entire legal research on his own for the past two years from within Canada on anti-trust legislation in the U.S., literally convincing major law firms on both sides of the border that the UFC was in breach and that it was a worthwhile case. People should know that it was Carlos who was the sole impetus to protect the interests of not just past and current fighters, but more importantly a future generation of athletes and the sport of MMA as a whole (as opposed to the sports entertainment which it currently is). This lawsuit was never about money for Carlos, it is about how the business is run (google Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act). While it is great that a few UFC fighters are actively pursuing legal action against Zuffa (the parent company of the UFC) through this case, and estimates are that close to 700 will eventually add their names to the class action lawsuit being filed, it is crucial that the public knows who the force behind this change was. It was not anyone from the long list of major UFC fighters that had serious issues with the UFC over the years (Couture, Ortiz, Rampage, Wanderlei, BJ, Shamrock, etc.) but rather a brave Ronin from Toronto who, time will eventually prove, has permanently altered the competitive landscape and course of mixed martial arts in the world.
