A Great Find and Rarity: the front cover of the 33-RPM-LP and one - TopicsExpress

A Great Find and Rarity: the front cover of the 33-RPM-LP and one of the first recordings which the great Czech conductor Jiri Belohlavek made for the Czech label Supraphon with the Brno State Philhamonic Orchestra (Státní Filharmonie Brno) in 1981, of the Third Symphony in E Minor op.53 [1898], a symphonic masterpiece of the (often forgotten) Czech composer Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900). This wonderful recording appeared only once on CD, and was released in 1990 on the (no longer existing) Japanese Supraphon-Denon label, but disappeared some years later. For a long time and many music lovers, Fibich was known only by just one piece, the Poème, which was played and recorded (over and over again) as an old warhorse, and edited on many records for Music-for-the-Millions-series (as happened with pieces like the Melody in F of Anton Rubinstein, Frülingsrauschen of Christian Sinding, the Minuet of Boccherini, etc, etc, you name it... But Fibich has left a Legacy with many beautiful compositions, including his large and imposing trilogy Hippodamia (also recorded by Supraphon and performed by the same Brno State Philharmonic O.) For now one could only find and listen to the old Supraphon-recordings from the 1950s of Fibichs Three Symphonies (with teh Czech Philharmonic Orchestra under Karel Sejna), and hopefully that Supraphon will decide to re-release Belohlaveks terrific recording of the great Fibich-Third again.
