A.H. How to Face Difficulty Allah (God) created the human being to struggle. And most of us don’t like struggle. We like ease. But the Holy Qur’an says, after difficulty comes ease or with difficulty comes ease. You’re not going to get ease without difficulty. When the difficulties come in your life, know that ease is coming. You can’t run from the difficulty with a bottle in your hand or with a reefer in your hand or with the pipe in your hand or with a woman by the hand thinking that this is going to console you and comfort you in your hour of difficulty. That’s running; that’s trying to escape. When you’re in difficulty, you must say, "Yes, Allah, I’m going to face it. Whatever it is, I know You are my Patron, you are my Friend, and You will see me through this. But I’ve got to face it. I can’t run from it." When we face the difficulty with the help of Allah (God), we find ourselves overcoming it. And every time you overcome it with the help of Allah (God), you’ve wiped out another idol. You won’t worship this or that idol any more. In Our Darkest Hour In our darkest hour, an hour when you think you should give up because the forces arrayed against you are so mighty; so powerful; and they look as though they have totally overwhelmed you, it is in that hour that your greatest opportunity for triumph is in you. And it is in that hour that most people give up the struggle and they never come to victory over the forces that are now apparently overwhelming them. Overcoming Adversity We can find no life form that came into existence without struggle. Whether it is the lowest form of insect or man himself; we see that overcoming adversity is a necessary part of life; since life cannot come into being without it. “Pain” is The Mother of Creativity; and without pain, you cannot create. If it were not for pain, none of us would have come to birth. If it were not for the pain and suffering of our fathers, then our spirituals would never have been written, and never sung. If it were not for the pain and hurt of slavery, where would The Blues have come from? Where would Jazz have come from? Where would Hip-Hop come from? The pain of Malcolm X Pain has brought us together. The pain of Nat Turner, the pain of Denmark Vesey: The pain that made them want to fight to be delivered from pain, only to suffer the pain of betrayal. The pain of Booker T. Washington, the pain of Marcus Garvey, the pain of W.E.B. DuBois: Men and women who stood for us and were ultimately betrayed by us because the wicked machinations of this world always worked against strong Black men and strong Black women to destroy leadership from among us. The pain of Malcolm X, my brother and my teacher who taught me as a young Muslim and gave me a strong example of a dedicated and committed soul: Pain drove him from the Nation; the pain of envy, the pain of jealousy. He ended up dead—destroyed because pain accompanies greatness. And if you can’t handle pain, then leave this Struggle to Raise Black men and women up alone. If you can’t handle being rebuked and scorned and evil spoken of by the people you come to serve, then you’d better leave this alone. The Lost of a Loved One “...What should our attitude be knowing that we have lost a mother, a sister, a friend? We should spend our time, not in grief, but thanking God for the days, the weeks, the months, the years that we were blessed to spend with her. See, gratitude for her life is what will ease the pain of our loss. ...”
