A Herald by any other name is still is Herald. Herald or Red-lipped snake (Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia). These snakes are widespread and extremely variable. Some have bright red upper lips, others orange or yellow to off-white lips or even dark lips. The overall body colour varies tremendously from light to dark olive green, light to medium or dark grey or blackish, sometimes with white speckling that may form bars. The head is often black or dark grey and usually darker than the rest of the body. At times the shiny head may reflect a bluish or turquoise colour. It is a frog-eater and favours damp areas where it comes out to hunt at night. Threatened individuals may put up quite a show, lifting the head well off the ground and flattening it to expose the lips and will strike with meaning. It is a mildly-venomous back-fanged snake and its venom has virtually no effect on humans and pets like cats and dogs.
