A LETTER TO LIONS FROM PID JUDGE BRIAN STEVENSON My fellow Lions: WELCOME to our International Convention in Toronto! As a proud Canadian, I know that you will enjoy the many attractions and sights that make Canada’s largest city such a great place to visit. We have come to Toronto from all over the world to celebrate another outstanding year of service to our communities and the world. I am sure you will agree that the past twelve months have seen our organization achieve great growth not only in membership, but also in SERVICE. Much credit must go to the leadership of our great International President Barry Palmer from Australia, and his fellow Executive Officers – Joe Preston from the USA, and Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada from Japan. Needless to say, Immediate Past International President Wayne Madden from the USA has provided a steady hand at the helm of LCIF, and our Foundation and its partners have made great inroads in addressing some of the major health problems that plague our world, especially in Africa, in assisting Districts to fulfill their dreams for better communities, and stepping up to the plate when disaster has visited. While enjoying all Toronto has to offer, however, delegate from Clubs around the world have a great responsibility while at the Convention. The foremost one is to elect a Second International Vice President – the Lion who will lead us into our second century of service to our communities and the world. As you are aware, there are two candidates seeking your support – PID Bob Corlew, and PID Mike Butler. I have personally chosen to support Mike Butler, and I will tell you why. Mike Butler possesses great and lengthy experience at all levels in Lions. He has been active and involved since 1974 – in his Club, in his District, in his Multiple District, and on the International Board of Directors. That service includes leading his Club to double in membership during his term as Club President, being a 100% District Governor and Chairperson of the Constitution & By-Laws Committee on the International Board of Directors. In addition, Mike has served on the Association’s Long Range Planning Committee, the Board Realignment Committee and the Finance & Headquarters Committee. In North America, he served as the Board Representative on the USA Canada Lions Leadership Forum Planning Committee. Mike has been a Group Leader on two occasions at the District Governor-Elect Leadership Seminars. Most recently, in 2001-2009, Mike was appointed as World Chairperson of the Global Membership Program. For his Lions service, Lion mike has received numerous awards and recognitions, including being a member of the Texas Lions Hall of Fame, and a Life Membership in Lions Clubs International. Sixteen International Presidents have honoured his service to Lions and our Association by presenting him with their Presidential Award. Mike has also received the highest recognition available to members, - the Ambassador of Good Will. He is a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow. In his home State of Texas, Mike created and managed a very successful construction company for 45 years. He has been called upon by Texas Governor Clements to serve on the Texas Juvenile and Delinquency Prevention advisory Board. He has also served his church as Chairperson of the Deacons. Mike’s wife Lion Sheryl is also a committed volunteer. For eighteen years, she has served her community by being a 100% President of her Lions Club, as well as in her district, in the positions of Zone and Region Chair, and as a District Cabinet Secretary. Her father was a Lion for 63 years, and her mother, also a Lion, has been involved with Lions for 60 years. Lion Sheryl is also a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow. Mike and Sheryl believe in and support “grass-roots” Lions, and in the truth that our Clubs – and their members – are the most important parts of our organization. Extremely popular throughout the world wherever they go, there is no doubt in my mind that Mike and Sheryl will be outstanding ambassadors for Joe Preston - Lions Clubs Internationalonal. Therefore, I urge you to examine the credentials and qualifications of both candidates, and support the one whom you believe will be the best Executive Officer. I urge you to make your own decision – not to be told by others who to vote for – make your own independent decision. I suggest that when you make that comparison, as I did, you will choose to support the candidate with the greatest experience in Lions, the candidate with a great outgoing personality, the candidate with a proven track record in Lions, the candidate with a very successful business background, the candidate with sound judgment, the candidate who will listen, the candidate who live by our Code of Ethics, and the candidate who is committed to making membership in Lions Club a satisfying and meaningful experience for all – LION MIKE BUTLER. You have a VOICE – you have a CHOICE – choose MIKE BUTLER! Judge Brian Stevenson Past International President
