A LITTLE TOUCH OF HEAVEN… To walk down her paths again and see all the life she shelters there. To hear the birds singing high in the trees and smell the perfumed air. To see the squirrels playing as they dart around the trees. To be back on Sand Mountain, is a little touch of Heaven too me. I go there every evening as I set and read my book. But I want to be there in person and walk down around the brook. I want to feel the warm wind on my face and hear nature singing me a song. God is there each time I go and always says welcome home. I want to stop at that little watering hole, even if it’s all dried up. I have memories running through my soul that always fills my cup. So many trails now that surround her since the loggers came and scarred the land. I pray my memories are strong enough and that God will hold my hand. To think about all the friends I had as a child and all the places we explored. Everyday a new adventure, never once were we bored. Fishing in the creek the smell of smoke in the air. Laughter rang throughout the woods all night, we were so happy there. I’m always thanking the Lord for the life He allowed me to live. I may be nearing the end of this journey now, but I know I’ll live again. Sometimes it’s the little things that stay trapped inside your mind. Like swimming in the winter or swinging from a vine. Back then everything was new and Sand Mountain seemed so tall. The trees were made for climbing and the paths were made to walk. Up one path for half a mile then stop and rest maybe get a drink. Then up we went as hard as we could all the way to a place called the sink. We hunted mushrooms there I was so happy with all my friends. At the end of the day we wondered back down with sacks of mushrooms in our hands. Sand Mountain gave to us freely and always welcomed us back. She was such a great teacher and I’m living proof of that. We all age faster than we admit and then sickness settles in. I wouldn’t change a thing but I would love to go there again. In memory of Sand Mountain Kentucky, and the kid that I once knew. God placed that mountain there for us to share, a little touch of Heaven from me to you. Fred Parks November 22, 2014
