A LOOK AT AN IMPORTED BRAND. I had pretty much enough of this but will not name the brand. People must make up their own minds. Rabbit food ingredients: Grass meal, Wheat, Wheat feed, Oat feed, Soya bean hulls, Yeast, Lucerne (alfalfa), Mint, Molasses, Limestone, Soya oil, Lignocellulose, Egg shells, Short-chain Fructo-oligosaccharides, Salt, Minerals. Then there is a bunch of added vitamins and minerals. Chinchilla food ingredients. Timothy hay, alfalfa (LUCERNE), Maize Gluten Meal, Rapeseed oil, Dicalcium phosphate, Sodium chloride, Fructo-oligosaccharides, Minerals, Blackcurrant flavor, Oregano oil. The same range of vitamins and minerals added to rabbit food, just different values. The chinchilla treats. Dried apple, dried carrot. There are also 2 snacks that contains dried banana. These are the same people who claim lucerne (alfalfa) based pellets are no good for chinchillas. Why does both their rabbit and chinchilla pellets then contain it? Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) is an artificial sweetener, it occurs naturally in food like whole wheat, barley and a few more. Why add it if you can just add whole wheat? Because it is cheaper than the natural product. Sodium Chloride is common salt. Natural plants contains enough natural salt, why add more? Rapeseed oil is a by-product used in food and pet food, also in making bio-diesel and a lot of other stuff. It is a cheap source of protein but contains ureric acid which causes damage to the cardiac muscles of animals. The ureric acid is limited and strictly regulated for human use. The latest problem is genetically modified rapeseed, about 90% of it in the USA is GMO (Montsanto). Why use it when there are natural and perfectly safe sources of protein? Because it is cheap. Dicalcium phosphate is a dietry supplement, made from calcium chloride and phosphoric acid. It is also used to fortify breakfast cereals. The prolongued use causes nausea (chinchillas cant vomit),loss of appetite, constipation, stomach pain, thirst, dry mouth and increased urination. Why use it when alfalfa (lucerne) gives all the calcium needed and some of the phosphorus? Adding the RIGHT amount of rolled oats and whole wheat gives the perfect ratio of 2 parts calcium for one part phosphorus, all naturally, no risk. Its used because it is cheap. Maize Gluten Meal. It is a by-product in the \manufacturing of maize meal. Not a true gluten but a very inexpensive source of protein in animal food. Incidently, it is also a very effective herbicide, used to kill plants. Here I lost interest in the food, Ive seen enough. As for the treats, I wrote a whole article on dried fruit a few weeks ago. The same fresh fruit that have so many benefits becomes poison when it is dried. In a 88g serving of dried apple, 49g is sugar (self-nutrition data). In a 74g serving of dried carrot, 59g is carbohydrate, of which 29g is sugar. Dried banana, 100g serving. 88g carbohydrates, of which 47g is sugar. Sales talk, all of it. This is cheap stuff and the arguments for using it doesnt wash. I am not allowed to share the recipe of the chinchilla pellets my mill makes for me but it doesnt contain any oils, no dietry supplements and no added vitamins or minerals. It has a more complete range of vitamins and minerals than any pellet I have ever seen for the simple reason that it is made of ALL the different plants needed to provide these values. All the sources of everything is totally natural, no by-products. The whole wheat I always say is so important, our pellets contain a lot of it. This makes it an expensive pellet because the mill doesnt take short cuts and believe in all natural ingredients, the cost is irrelevant. Lucerne pellets are not chinchilla pellets but good chinchilla pellets contain lucerne because of the nutritional value. It also contains a lot more to give everything else. I see the attack on my food have stopped. They went all out at some stage to shut me down and discredit my pellets. There is no more mention of it. Just like they also removed all the articles and research reports I posted on their page about indipendent studies done in other countries about hay. Sales talk will kill more chinchillas in this country than disease ever will. If I had only one choice, I would feed their rabbit pellets to my chinchillas because it is a lot better than their chinchilla pellets. Luckily I dont have to, I can feed the pellets I have made especially for me. The only problem I have with my pellets? Not even the rescued chinchillas get sick or die. They just keep going, year after year. I have so many long term rescued chinchillas now that I cant take in more. Off course this is not a problem, it is testimony of what good food should do. How can I take in chinchillas with advanced fatty liver disease and still post pics of them living happy lives 6 years after I took them in? And people fall for this because of sweet talk. They dont have the best interest of your animals at heart, they want your money. I want it too but I dont even market my own food because I dont sell my soul for a profit. I cant tell you what I do with the profit I make because I dont play on peoples feelings to sell more food. I sell enough as it is, thank you. I just dont kill chinchillas in the process because I dont mess with good and expensive food to maximize profits. 4 Year max, then people will feel it. Just like they do with other cheap food sold here at ridiculous prizes. For the good of your chinchillas my ass. They will make a killing, literally.
