Share this!!: Animal Health Alert 7/22/14 Update about a respiratory infection: There seems to be a new upper respiratory infection going around Roswell affecting dogs. The most obvious signs and symptoms seem to be a deep hacking cough and some lethargy. So far it does not seem to be progressing to pneumonia and most dogs seem to be recovering fully in about 10 to 14 days. Dogs do not seem to have protection against this infection even with current Bordetella vaccination so we believe it is either a more complex syndrome or possibly a different virus. We are pursuing more diagnostic tests to determine the causative agent and how best to treat these patients. In the meantime please try to avoid places where dogs congregate in large numbers, and practice good hygiene between your pets at home. If you are going to be adopting or acquiring new dogs try to keep them quarantined from your other dogs for at least 7 to 10 days. This disease is most likely transmitted by aerolized droplets from the coughing. If you have any further questions please contact us at College Garden Animal Hospital and we will try to keep you updated as to further developments. Sincerely, The Doctors and Staff at College Garden Animal Hospital College Garden Animal Hospital 502 E College Roswell, NM 88201 (575)624-2424
