A MUST READ OHS STORY!!!!…..PART ONE... THIS IS A VERY BEAUTIFUL STORY ABOUT A KITTY NAMED FILA ….A KITTY WHO CAME MINUTES AWAY FROM DEATH….THIS MONSTROUS LOOKING KITTY WAS RESCUED...THEN LOVE CHANGED EVERYTHING…..THE ENDING SURPRISED US ALL…ESPECIALLY ME….. VERONICA VERONITSKI, the shelter manager at OHS, was called by a NASHVILLE KILL SHELTER saying that they had one of our OHS kitties there and were 15 minutes away from euthanizing her…Her CHIP was traced back to Owensboro Humane Society!! The Nashville owner had relinquished this 2-yr old cat to die…VERONICA worked quickly and called our President in the Bahamas where she was working. This kitty didnt look familiar so they struggled with what to do. WAS THIS REALLY AN OHS KITTY??...OR JUST A CHIP THAT WAS PUT IN FOR SOMEONE?….. BUT WHAT IF WE WERE LETTING AN OHS KITTY DIE?? Our President of OHS lives and breathes the no-kill philosophy…I spoke to her in the Bahamas. Ill never forget what she said..It was beautiful…She said, WE ARE THEIR GUARDIANS…. WE ARE THERE TO PROTECT THEM AND KEEP THEM SAFE…ITS OUR RESPONSIBILITY….It was VERY clear to all of us what to do. WE WOULD SAVE FILA. IT WAS THE ONLY THING TO DO... even though the shelter had deemed her VERY AGGRESSIVE...We sort of smiled at that assessment though …How many kitties are truly aggressive that come out of a shelter? Our manager VERONICA didnt hesitate to take on the 5-hr round trip the next day on her day off! She was also passionate about saving FILA. She called the NASHVILLE SHELTER and asked them to hold her till morning…The shelter closed without knowing the outcome… THEN I WAS CALLED TO HELP….I LIVE IN NASHVILLE..I had to get to the shelter when they opened to make sure she wasnt euthanized immediately the next morning…Then I would MEET VERONICA HALFWAY TO OWENSBORO, KY and she would take FILA the rest of the way HOME TO OHS. I was now part of this passionate trio to save this fortunate kitty... I showed up when the shelter opened and was very surprised to find that THIS KITTY WAS HIGHLY AGGRESSIVE!…SIGNS ON HER CAGE NOT TO EVEN TOUCH HER. When I got there, they had to decide whether they could even RELEASE her to me because of LIABILITY…I texted our President, Carmel, that the cat WAS very aggressive but I WOULDNT LEAVE WITHOUT HER! I agonized waiting for the decision of whether to release her….Would they want to just euthanize her? I knew that if a cat was THIS aggressive, then shed been abused and I would NEVER abandon her….She would find a place OUTSIDE chasing MICE the rest of her days but not die…I was really mad then…Now I WAS going to fight for her!!! I waited anxiously. The Director came out and spoke to me. They really did care and wanted her to live…They released her...THEY HAD TO USE TONGS TO PUT HER IN MY CRATE!! SHE WASNT TOUCHABLE! Still…..strangely...I wasnt scared at all.. They brought FILA out ….sat the crate down at my feet…There were WARNINGS all over her.…The words they kept using…. DANGEROUS…DO NOT TOUCH….I BEGAN TO TALK TO FILA SOFTLY and I BRUSHED MY HAND AGAINST THE CAGE GENTLY, never putting myself in danger… THEN STRANGELY HER BODY RUBBED UP AGAINST THE CAGE GENTLY BACK…I TOLD HER THAT SHE WAS GOING HOME….I said YOURE GOING HOME LITTLE GIRL…..ITS GONNA BE OKAY.. I was quite shocked by her response. FILA seemed to understand. NOW THE TRANSPORT WOULD BEGIN AND ILL NEVER FORGET THIS EXPERIENCE…and probably will never experience this again... PART 2……..STAY TUNED….. (post by Leigh Robbins)
