Tinas Tip of the Day: FREE RUNNER approaching your turns: The Free Runner that wants to turn is my personal favorite horse to ride. They depend on you more for timing of rate and being specific in your position into (3 to 5 foot depending on the size & style of horse) and around the barrel. The free runner does best if you sit in the middle of saddle but about 2 strides from barrel sit even deeper, and depending on the horse you may need a two hand check, (bump/release, some prefer inside rein bump only), say whoa, than its important that you go to horn at spot one/the entrance when your leg gets to barrel, at that point stay sitting deep, guiding with a low hand (unless another bump is needed) until spot 2 the backside, than let your inside hip and shoulder come back a little more, lift your inside hand an inch or two with another quick bump to finish turn, and press with outside leg as you look up at spot 3 the exit, at that point pull up on horn, give horse the rein to hurry out, go on to your next barrel or home. Of course all cues are dependent of perfect timing based in the moment, when to ask for rate, for turn, when to use inside leg or outside, inside rein or two rein bumps, when to sit, but what will not change is where you look and the position you need going into and around the barrel, so be specific where you look is where you go. But you dont have to kick the free runner, usually just one leg to keep their line or help in a turn is enough. The free runner that does not HUNT may require more bumps for rate and sitting earlier & help with rein and leg bumps in the turn too.
