A NEVER BEFORE SHOWN AND MAYBE NEVER AGAIN SEEN FLUORITE: As the end of Fluorite week draws to a close it is important to profile a spectacular specimen of Fluorite. Without going into the politics of an unfortunate situation, the specimen you are viewing may have been lost to science forever. The Department of Mines and Mineral Resources Arizona Mining And Mineral Museum was closed in 2011, and all of the specimens belonging to the museum were put in storage. Without a curator, the Arizona Historical Society took control of the collection and never re-opened a new museum - labels became lost along with provenance and who knows where specimens that helped advance earth science in the Phoenix area may have ended up. Fortunately, 650 prime specimens displayed as a secondary collection and belonging to the Flagg Mineral Foundation, did not meet such a fate and the best of the best can be viewed at The University of Arizona Geology Museum.
