My friends, you will very probably receive a lot of informations about BRAZIL during the next few weeks; but to my mind, the infos Im sharing with you today are very different. In fact, this film was shot in the îlé axè ala Obatalandê, Lauro de Freitas, State of Bahia, Brazil. In this movie, you have a fantastic opportunity to discover a quite unknown tradition related to the Afro-Brazilian culture: the spiritual tradition of the Caboclos. In the Afro-Brazilian culture, the Caboclos are considered to be spirits of native Indians. In ancient times, when the African slaves ran away from the fields & the farms owned by the Portuguese, they had to go deep into the Amazonian jungle to be free; There they very frequently met Native Indian people, who helped them in various ways to survive in their new home. This is one of the main reasons why, until this day, ancient Native Indian spirits are loved, respected and honored in several forms of Afro-Brazilian cults. Thus, in this video you can see 4 Caboclos (Pena Branca, Marujo, Caiçara & Arariboia) chanting, dancing & giving their blessings. Moreover, considering the fact that in the Afro-Brazilian religious conception of the world, the Caboclos are seen as spiritual beings who don’t belong to the human world, they have to be channeled by special psychics called Iyalorixa (priestess), Babalorixa (priest) & Iyawo (initiate). So, during this ceremony, the Caboclos are channeled by the Babalorixa Anderson Argolo de Oxalà & 3 Iyawos; they all are in an altered state of consciousness usually called “Trance”. Please note that even if in this film everyone is chanting dancing & having fun, this is a real ritual; in other words: this “Samba dos Caboclos” is a joyful ceremony in which the spiritual & the human realms deeply intertwine in a very unique Afro-Brazilian way.
