A NIGHT OF COMEDY AND POETRY Come laugh your prickly pear off as Steven Michael Quezada (BREAKING BAD) and Michael Jordan take the stage for a night of comedy, combined with the impactful poetry of Hakim Bellamy, Hawah and Asha Gardner. STEVEN MICHAEL QUEZADA Steven is one of the most noted comedians out of the southwest, touring comedy clubs across the United States since 1987. He is a five-time recipient of the New Mexico Hispanic Entertainers Association Comedian of the Year Award, and he has been appeared on HBO, Showtime, the Latino comedy feature Que Locos, and was recently hand-selected to open for Saturday Night Live alumnus and movie actor Rob Schneider, and Anjelah Johnson. Steven also recently performed a hilarious bit of his stand-up routine on The Arsenio Hall Show. Steven is a life-long resident of New Mexico. He pursued his love for performing by studying Theatre Arts at Eastern New Mexico University, and through the years, has earned the distinction as one of the most charitable celebrities in New Mexico. Steven has raised money for organizations such as Youth Development Incorporated (YDI), the Boys and Girls Club of New Mexico and countless others. Steven has devoted time to Actors Core, Mi Voz, Elev8 and gang intervention programs sponsored by YDI. He has taught acting classes to local kids and through The After After Party, has provided on-the-job training for future filmmakers, including students from the Digital Arts and Technology Academy (DATA) in Albuquerque. He is an elected member of the Albuquerque Public Schools, which is one of the largest school districts in the nation. He is the Secretary of the Board. Steven is married to Cherise Quezada, has four children, and enjoys playing golf in his spare time. HAKIM BELLAMY As the inaugural Poet Laureate of Albuquerque, NM (2012-2014), Hakim Bellamy is a national and regional Poetry Slam Champion, and holds three consecutive collegiate poetry slam titles at the University of New Mexico. His poetry has been published in Albuquerque inner-city buses and numerous anthologies. Bellamy was recognized as an honorable mention for the University of New Mexico Paul Bartlett Ré Peace Prize for his work as a community organizer and journalist in 2007, and was awarded the Emerging Creative Bravos Award by Creative Albuquerque this year. Recently, Bellamy was named Local iQs Best Poet for the fourth consecutive year on their annual Smart List, and he has been named Best Poet in the Weekly Alibis annual Best of Burque poll every year since 2010. He is the co-creator of the multimedia Hip Hop theater production Urban Verbs: Hip-Hop Conservatory & Theater that has been staged throughout the country. He facilitates youth writing workshops for schools and community organizations in New Mexico and beyond. Having recently released his first book, Swear, Hakim successfully defended his MA Thesis in Communications and Journalism Department at the University of New Mexico in May. He is the proud father of a 5 year-old miracle and is the founding president of Beyond Poetry LLC. MICHAEL JORDAN Michael Jordan has performed stand up comedy for 11 years, starting at Albuquerques Laffs Comedy Club. He has performed at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, the world famous Comedy Store in Hollywood, California, The Leche Lounge in Hollywood, California, the Hon-Dah Casino in Show Low, Arizona and several local casinos and venues in New Mexico. Michael was also a regular on the Duke City Comedy television show. He has opened for comedian greats Bill Kirchenbauer, and Bruce Baum. Michael is proud to keep his comedy clean, PG or lower. ASHA GARDNER Asha Gardner is a rising spoken word artist, lyricist and singer from Washington, D.C. She is the 2013 DC Youth Grand Slam Champion, member of the 2013 DC Youth Slam Team (ranked 2nd in the world at this years Brave New Voices Festival) and co-founder of the Wilson High School Poetry Club (2012 and 2013 Louder Than A Bomb DMV champions). At the age of 17, she has performed on stages with Rachel McKibbens, Alice Walker and, Grammy nominated, Carolyn Malachi. This past summer, she journeyed to South Africa as part of a poetic cultural exchange with the Split This Rock Organization where she performed and helped lead poetry workshops in Johannesburg, Lesotho, Pretoria, and Soweto. In 2011 graduated from the Fly By Light youth program and stars in the new documentary film, Fly By Light, screening Saturday evening here at AFME. HAWAH Hawah is an artist, author, educator, non-profit leader and inspirational young voice for todays generation. He tours nationally and internationally facilitating interactive workshops, performing poetry, and teaching yoga. He has made numerous appearances on XM National Satellite Radio and has been featured on Pacificas National Radio Program Peacewatch and the late Damu Smiths weekly radio show Spirit in Action. An Inspiring Young Leader on Innerfaith Voices, a radio program produced by WAMU and aired by its 8 National affiliate stations, Hawah has also been featured on CNN, BBC, FOX, and AL JAZERRA and opened with spoken word poetry for great personalities such as: Tavis Smiley, Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni, Mary J. Eisenhower, Claus Nobel, Dead Prez, Dick Gregory, Darryl DMC McDaniels, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, and Swami Tejomayanandaji. Over the past 12 years he has authored 4 books, produced 3 documentary films and 2 musical CDs; he is the lead producer of the film, Fly By Light, (screening here at AFME) and co-founder of the non-profit organization One Common Unity.
