A NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft investigating Hurricane Simon has found the cyclone to be weakening rapidly. Maximum sustained winds are now 75 mph - a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Simon is expected to weaken to a tropical storm soon, and likely become a remnant low by Tuesday. The hurricane is centered as of 5 p.m. EDT / 2 p.m. PDT about 485 miles west of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. Simon is expected to produce total rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches - with isolated amounts around 8 inches - during the next several days across central portions of the Baja California peninsula and the state of Sonora in northwest Mexico. These rains could produce flash flooding and mud slides. The deep moisture associated with Simon is expected to spread into the U.S. Desert Southwest beginning on Tuesday, which could trigger another heavy rain event in that region.
