A New Online Maay Language TV Channel (maaytv) Set To Launch Soon August 28, 2013MaayTV Edit A substantial number of people in Somalia and to a lesser number in Kenya and Ethiopia (and the diaspora) whose first language is Maay lack dedicated audiovisual mass media outlets such as radio and television. Although Maay is recognised by the Somali Provisional Constitution, adopted in August 1, 2012 (Article 5. Official Languages) (“The official language of the Federal Republic of Somalia is Somali (Maay and Maxaa-tiri), and Arabic.”) as one of the two variants of the Somali language, the current Somali government has not made a bona fide attempt to comply with its constitutional obligation. Hence, this constitutional provision is no more than “ink on paper”. This is evident from the fact that when in March, 2013 the state-owned Somali National Television (SNTV) began broadcasting short news bulletins in the Maay language, these broadcasts proved short-lived, after the Maay presenters abandoned their presenting roles, due to the wilful neglect and discrimination they faced during their work at SNTV. The SNTV managers failed to provide the necessary resources and security (available to Maxaatiri presenters) to Maay presenters to fulfil their journalistic duties in Somalia’s dangerous working environment. This new online Maay language TV Channel (maaytv) was created taking into account the above considerations. In addition, Maay TV aims to provide a dedicated online TV channel and an upload centre for Maay media clips, so as to facilitate advancement of the Maay language and provide a means for Maay-speaking peoples to promote their native language. Furthermore Maay TV will contribute to the amelioration of the status of the Maay language and help with move from the current state of posting myriad of Maay language clips here and there. The Maay TV channel is currently being released in test mode but will soon be the home of a full-fledged Maay language TV channel streaming free over the Internet.
