A PA - Nixon Souvenir US Vice - President Richard Nixon visited the USSR in July 1959, he opened the US National Exhibition in Moscow and then toured the USSR. About his flight to Moscow: “On July 23, 1959, an enormous white and blue jet arrived in Moscow non-stop from New York, spanning 4,800 miles at a record time of 8 hours 53 minutes. The Boeing 707-321 was carrying 73 newsmen and government aides, who were accompanying Vice President Nixon on the occasion of the American National Exhibition in Sokolniki Park, Moscow. The delegation had achieved an important milestone for the United States, even before setting foot on Russian soil. They shattered the passenger flight speed record, set only ten days before by a Soviet TU -114 turbojet traveling to the Soviet Exhibition in New York. The win inaugurated a subtle but pervasive atmosphere of one-upsmanship, one that would permeate the whole of the 1959 Russian-American exchange…” A special Zippo lighter with a PA logo was a souvenir of the flight...
