A POLICE captain is standing trial for allegedly staging a fake marriage and rape. The 39-year-old Bahraini appeared at the High Criminal Court yesterday to plead not guilty. He was reported by his 31-year-old Bahraini wife, who claimed he orchestrated a sham wedding and that their marriage certificate was faked. A second man, 42, standing trial for allegedly posing as a religious cleric to conduct the ceremony also denies the allegation. Both men, who are not in custody, entered not guilty pleas during a hearing that took place behind closed doors yesterday. The alleged victim told prosecutors that she was in a relationship with the police captain for seven years before he proposed to her and they got married in February. She said she initially filed a complaint against him because they had regular fights and claimed he attacked her with a knife. We knew each other for seven years and we were in love, she said in her statement to prosecutors. However, we got into fights and I filed a complaint against him at a military court before we stopped talking to each other last December. He had tried to attack me using a knife once at my apartment. In February he contacted me and told me that he was let go from his job and that I should drop the charges against him. He said he would marry me and that everything was going to be good between us, like before. However, she claims he staged a fake marriage conducted by an apothecary to win her back. We went to an apartment in Aali to get married and he (the apothecary) pretended to be a marriage official and I fell for it, she said. My brother and a family friend were witnesses to the marriage. When I later asked for copies of the marriage certificate I found out that they were fake and the man who got us married was not a legal marriage official. However, the police captain claimed she filed a false complaint against him because she was upset that he took another wife. We were in a relationship for some time and she wanted to take revenge when I married another woman, he told prosecutors. She told me that she would lie and tell authorities that I raped her after pretending to marry her, which did not happen. The trial has been adjourned until December 22 for review.
