A Pakistani mob killed a woman and two of her granddaughters after a member of her religious sect was accused of posting blasphemous material on Facebook in the latest instance of growing violence against non-Muslim minorities in that country. Under Pakistani law, Ahmadis are banned from using Muslim greetings, saying Muslim prayers or referring to his place of worship as a mosque. An Ahmadi’s use of such terms constitutes blasphemy. The dead, including a seven-year-old girl and her baby sister, were all Ahmadis, who considered themselves Muslim but whose religious sect believes in a prophet after Mohammed. A 1984 Pakistani law declared all members of the Ahmadi religious sect to no longer be considered Muslims and many Pakistanis therefore consider members of the Ahmadi sect to be heretics. As a result of that objectionable post, a mob attacked the family, burned down their home and killed 3 female members of their family. A spokesman for the Ahmadi community said it was the worst attack on the Ahmadi community in Pakistan since simultaneous attacks on Ahmadi places of worship killed 86 Ahmadis four years ago. Accusations of blasphemy against Ahmadi’s are rocketing in Pakistan, from 1 in 2011 to approximately 100 this past year.
