A Paradise Cove Story This is a little picture story that takes place 1926 and 1927, taken from a journal written by a mother, Florence Harger Burd for her daughter, Florence Burd, nicknamed ‘Tad’, (1919 - 2003) . From what I can determine, the mother and daughter, left the father behind in Michigan, traveling to Seattle to join the mother’s family. Both mother and daughter had health issues and bounced around different living places and jobs for a few years. Then in the Summer of 1925, Mrs. Burd took a job in a lodge on Vashon where parents stayed while their children attended Camp Sealth, for Campfire Girls. Tad attended camp. They liked this so much, feeling that it helped with their health issues, that they decided to stay. Mr. and Mrs. William Bates lived near Camp Sealth and permitted Mrs. Burd and Tad to stay in their beach cabin while they went to California for the Winter 1925-26. Mrs. Burd purchased a lot from the Bates’ and hired a couple of guys to clear the lot and build a bulkhead. This area was accessible only by boat or by trail at this time and Tad was home schooled for heir first school year. Housing materials arrived by barge and someone built a cottage. Tad spent the Summer of 1926 there and then returned to Michigan to her father for 2nd Grade. The Bates’ had a caretaker “Happy” Edwin Barrows who live in his own shack. Happy appears in photos with Tad. Following are selected items. The entire journal: content.statelib.wa.gov/cdm/compoundobject/collection/vashon/id/2358
