A Planet Waves reader wrote to me today and asked why I had not mentioned the wounded healer aspect of Chion in my article yesterday. This is my reply: Thanks for your note. I dont consider the wounded healer an especially useful construct in counseling, particularly for people who do not think of themselves as healers. I have worked with Chiron for 19 years and studied the transits of every single client; not once has that concept come up as a narrative that the client brought to the table themselves, under the influence of a Chiron transit. I recognize that there are people who this seems to fit. On one level every person on the planet is wounded. So it could include everyone, which would not make it specific enough to reach people in a way thats helpful, or to apply to individual cases. Most of the time the key phrase wounded healer is regurgitated because astrologers who have not worked extensively with Chiron bandy it around as the one thing they think they know about Chiron. Many people have just read it in a book; its the only thing they know about Chiron. Whatever the wounded healer scenario might actually be, there are going to be many other ways to look at it, many factors and influences involved that could be described differently. I dont think that the issue of someone who has not addressed their own pain but who tries to help others is specific to Chiron. I do see that scenario -- I just have not seen where the Chiron connection is astrologically. We could do research into the lives of famous unhealed healers and see if that manifests as a meaningful concept; I dont think thats been done yet. Chiron was indeed injured later in life and the way he responded to that was to go more deeply into his own healing process, along the way helping many people with the remedies he developed. This translates to a property of Chiron that I did not mention, which is the way that injuries, hurts, disabilities, etc., can be used to concentrate wisdom and power. When Chiron is working well in a persons chart, that is what they do. I have written about that in other articles. In the current piece, it was an implied theme. Pretty strongly implied actually.
