A President or a Leader? If all Malawians want is a president, - TopicsExpress

A President or a Leader? If all Malawians want is a president, then no need be worked up with the elections. For certain, Malawi has a president and will always have a president for as long as the constitution remains respected. Chapter VIII, section 78 of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi states, “There shall be a President of the Republic who shall be Head of State and Government and the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Force of Malawi”. Unfortunately, not every person who occupies the high office of president is a leader. Who then is a leader? What is leadership? Dr. Myles Munroe says “leadership is the capacity to INFLUENCE others through INSPIRATION, which is generated by PASSION; motivated by a VISION; which is birthed by a CONVICTION which is produced from a PURPOSE.” Without a clear purpose, a leader cannot have a strong conviction that gives birth to a compelling vision which generates passion in the followers, who then become so inspired that they are influenced to pursue and realize that vision. In the absence of genuine leaders, imposters come with many empty promises and handouts to coerce people into following them. In the movie, Gandhi, Ben Kingsley portrays the life of Mahatma Gandhi, the non-violent liberator of India. Watching this movie, you will understand that what we call leadership in this country is a far cry from what true leadership ought to be. Gandhi did not go to India with malitaka a nsalu za chipani (bales of party cloth) to buy votes from the people. It was his deep conviction that a free India was possible that gave rise to a movement that shook the British Empire and brought the oppressor on her knees. The non-violence movement, a tough sale to the deeply divided and very poor 300million Indians triumphed. Gandhi did not put up a flamboyant campaign with expensive celebrity vehicles and a huge budget. It was his VISION, PASSION, CONVICTION and INTEGRITY that INSPIRED millions to follow him without expecting any material benefit from the leader. That is leadership. True leaders do not pursue followers, rather, followers pursue the leader. (…to be continued)
