A QUESTION FOR ALL TO PONDER: Do we really have men and women [living or dead] we can rightly call our statesmen or women in our chequered political history- taking into consideration the actual and practical meaning of the word-Statesman? Or is our own statesmen and women –a bunch of feckless, religious bigots and tribal champions masquerading as statesmen? Before you start to worry about the answers, I would like us to cast our minds back on the following personalities who distinguished themselves in the political diary of their respective ‘nations’ and who even paid the ultimate price where necessary, to see that things were made right and good for all concerned no matter your color or the language you speak; 1. Dr. Nelson Mandela of South Africa 2. Mr.Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya 3. Mr. Mahatma Gandhi of India 4. Mr. Abraham Lincoln of the United States of America 5. Mr. Julius Nyerere of Tanzania 6. Dr. Kenneth Kaunda of the famous ‘Zambia Shall Be Free.’ 7. General Ariel Sharon of Israel, just to name a few. Do we have such people in Nigeria –past and present that could be placed on any ‘political scale’ with this cream of people mentioned above? Or do we hope to have them in future pending when we might have put our acts together? Does anybody know how many years it will take us to realize this noble vision? The answer is uncertain but we have to anchor our hope on the fact that we live in a world of endless possibilities. Finally, I dare say that the ‘Biggest Political Test’ confronting our so-called political leaders and presidential aspirants today is –‘to fashion out a true, realistic and stable nation ’ – that all Nigerians can be ‘proud of’ and until this is done and achieved, we are all on our own individually. In the absence of the above reality, our essence of citizenship in this country will remain a capital ‘FARCE.’ This is the millennium challenge facing our youths – the leaders of tomorrow.
