A Quick Look At VO2 Max: We’ve all seen the Gatorade - TopicsExpress

A Quick Look At VO2 Max: We’ve all seen the Gatorade commercials with Lance Armstrong and other various athletes biking or running in a lab with tubes and wires attached all over them. More than likely when that scene popped up, you were probably wondering what kind of mad science experiment they were doing. These people were probably performing a VO2 max assessment (along with a ton of production value wires and sirens and lights). VO2 max in a nutshell is a measure of how efficient your body is at utilizing oxygen during activity. The more efficient you are at utilizing oxygen, the better your aerobic fitness. There have been numerous studies linking the health benefits of an above average VO2 max. Some studies have even shown that you can live longer being an in shape smoker than a sedentary non smoker. This measure is also a great tool for endurance athletes and weekend warriors alike. If you train for an event or just train because you love activity, VO2 max assessments can assist you in training more efficiently. During a VO2 max analysis, some form of heart rate measure is included. From these two pieces of data, we can determine your training zones (intensity) based on heart rate. Whether you are a casual exerciser looking to improve your aerobic fitness or an experienced athlete looking to improve your training, VO2 max analysis will assist you in reaching your goals more efficiently than just guessing. Outside of most collegiate physiology laboratories, these services are scarce. We are fortunate to have these services available at Jaguar Therapeutics. If you are interested in testing your VO2 max, stop in or call to schedule an appointment. -Tyler
