A Rooster was running wild in the halls of John Adams middle school today, as Captain Goose took his vintage base ball gear to school to work with Mrs Bolin and her Social Studies class. The kids were on the edge of their seats listening to the crazy way this game was played in the 1860s and before. After the instructional time, they took to the gym (because, yes, it was rainy/wet) and the students were able to try their hand at bare handed catching, and swinging the heavy willow of the times. The students were not ready for class time to be over, and hopefully they will find their way to the hallowed grounds of Schmitt Field later this year to check out a game. I suspect I will see a few. The cool thing was, as I was in the hallway waiting, many students came up to me and told me they remembered me coming to their class last year and that they saw me at a game. Spreading the gospel of the game.. one middle school student at a time !
