A SUNDERLAND player got three points yesterday - but not on the football pitch. Black Cats forward Stephane Sessegnon was caught doing 37mph in a 30mph zone on January 30. A speed camera clocked the Benin international’s Land Rover on Western Terrace in East Boldon. The 29-year-old was due at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday to answer a charge of speeding. However, the Sunderland AFC star sent a letter into the court pleading guilty and apologising for going too fast. Janice Bellamy, prosecuting, told the court that Sessegnon, who lives in Ponteland, Newcastle, already had three points in his licence. The letter he sent to court said: “I didn’t realise my speed was over the limit until after. “When I realised I reduced it. “Please accept that it was a genuine error.” Ms Bellamy told the court that the former Paris Saint-Germain player would have been offered a fixed penalty notice, a fine of £60, had he held a UK driving licence. District Judge Caroline Gouldbourn fined Sessegnon £60 and added three points to his licence. She said: “I will deal with him as if he had been given a fixed penalty notice, despite his income. “I am giving him credit for his guilty plea. “I don’t see why he should be treated any differently to any other defendant.” Sessegnon, a Benin international, joined Sunderland from Paris St Germain in a £6m deal in January 2011. He was voted the club’s player of the year for the 2011-12 season and was the toast of Black Cats fans last term after opening the scoring in the 3-0 Tyne-Wear derby win at rivals Newcastle United, having been sent off in the corresponding fixture in the previous campaign.
