A Sad Story, but true. This happened to a friend today at Trillium hospital in Mississauga. I think that most of us do not know how shameful our health system has become. My friend is an epileptic, she had a bad seizure on Wed. she fell and broke her foot, spent 7 hours in pain in emergency before anyone even looked at her. Then was sent to x-ray and found out she would have to have surgery on Thur. morning, so they kept her overnight and did the surgery first thing in the morning. They put a metal rod in her foot, told her to stay off it for 6 weeks and discharged her. Well, they did not call her people to pick her up for over an hour, then found she could hardly walk on her other foot. They had not given her anything to eat by 3pm and had not given her, her meds. When her community service worker came to pick her up, she found that she could not take her home because she lives alone, and is in danger of having more seizures, as well as not being able to walk on that foot. The worker tried to arrange with CCAC to have some help at home. They will only come once a week and only to help bathe, and that is not a bath. There is no other help unless you pay anywhere from 15 to 20 dollars an hour. This person is on disabled pension, she is only 55, so she gets no senior care, or anything else. The community service worker will see her once or twice a week. This is not much help, her family is far away and cannot take her in. The hospital agreed to keep her one more night. They suggested a respice.. guess what...you have to pay for that as well. This whole event is turning into a horror story for the poor women who up until now has been able to look after herself. She is a Special Olympics champion who is very into helping others. Ironic. Apparently if you are 34 to 65 there is no help for you unless you have enough income to pay for it. Because of all the cuts to our medical care system, there does not seem to be any compassion left. the quality of care has gone downhill and we need to be aware of this. People are just being thrown out into the street whether they can look after themselves or not. A group of us need to get together and start a foundation to help people in these situations.
