A Slave to Sin Scripture reading: Romans 6:8–14 Key verse: Romans 6:14 Sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. The story is told of a prince who left the safety of his father’s castle to seek adventures in the wide world. He left his riches behind and began to live as an unfortunate peasant. He dressed in rags, got food where he could, and endured many hardships. He lived so long that way, he almost forgot that he had once lived like a prince and could not even remember where the palace was. Eventually after much searching, his father found him and brought him home. The boy had been a prince the whole time; he had simply chosen not to live like one. The prince’s actions seem irrational, don’t they? But that’s exactly what we as believers do when we push aside the grace of God and choose to live in the spiritual poverty of bondage to sin: “Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him … Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 6:8–9, 11 nasb). Are you living as an heir to the riches of God’s glorious grace, or are you living as a slave to sin, as though you had never been redeemed? You do have a choice: “Sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace” (Rom. 6:14 nasb). Dear Father, I choose the riches of Your grace. I am no longer a slave to sin.
