A-State Women’s Basketball Announces 2013-14 Schedule JONESBORO, Ark. (8/9/13) – The Arkansas State University women’s basketball program released its full 2013-14 schedule on Friday, which includes 30 regular-season contests and a trip to Cancun, Mexico over the Thanksgiving holiday to participate in the 2013 Cancun Challenge. The schedule is made up of seven teams that advanced to postseason a play last year – UT-Martin (NCAA Tournament), North Carolina (NCAA Tournament), Wichita State (NCAA Tournament), Texas A&M (NCAA Tournament), Illinois (WNIT), Western Kentucky (WNIT) and UALR (WNIT). This year’s slate of games also features the Red Wolves first trip to Cancun since 2000 to participate in the Cancun Challenge where the Red Wolves will play three games in three days against the Tar Heels, Fighting Illini and Arizona State. The tournament will start Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 28) with all three matchups set to begin at 2:30 p.m. central time. Other non-conference opponents on the 2013-14 ledger include Missouri State, Austin Peay, Kent State, Louisiana Tech, Tennessee Tech and Central Arkansas. “I am very pleased with the team that has been assembled for the upcoming season,” A-State women’s basketball head coach Brian Boyer said. “I think the schedule that is in place will allow the team to reach its potential. There are several opponents that have the potential to play in the postseason next year. Hopefully that will help us to reach our goal of doing the same.” Led by returning Second-Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection Jane Morrill, the Red Wolves will play at pair of exhibition matchups in Jonesboro before officially opening the regular season in November. ASU will take on Harding University in the Convocation Center Oct. 28 followed by a matchup with former A-State assistant coach Tanya Ray and Arkansas-Monticello Nov. 4. The regular season will officially tip-off in Jonesboro against Missouri State Nov. 11 for the Red Wolves first regular season opener in the Convocation Center since the 2008-09 season. Coach Boyer and his squad will hit the road Nov. 15 for a trip to Clarksville, Tenn., to play Austin Peay, but will return home for a pair of matchups against UT-Martin (Nov. 19) and Kent State (Nov. 22). The Red Wolves will hit the road for their longest road swing of the season Nov. 25 with a trip to Ruston, La., to play Louisiana Tech followed by the trip to Cancun Nov. 28-30. December action opens on the 12th in Wichita, Kan., for a game against the Shockers of Wichita State. A-State makes its only home appearance of December on the 18th against Tennessee Tech, but will stay in the state of Arkansas for a road matchup with Central Arkansas Dec. 21. As part of an eight day, three-game road swing, Arkansas State will travel to College Station, Texas to play Texas A&M Dec. 30 for the first time since the 1998-99 season. It will also mark the first time that the Red Wolves have played the 2011 NCAA National Champions in College Station. Arkansas State will start the New Year and Sun Belt Conference play with a pair of road games against league newcomers UT-Arlington (Jan. 2) and Texas State (Jan. 4) before returning to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center for its longest homestand of the year. A-State will host Troy in its SBC home opener Jan. 8, followed by matchups against South Alabama (Jan. 11) and Georgia State (Jan. 14). A-State will venture to Western Kentucky Jan. 18, before returning home to take on in-state opponent UALR Jan. 25. A-State will make the return trip to Little Rock March 1 for its only road game in its final five contests of the regular season. Other SBC road matchups include Louisiana-Monroe (Jan. 29), Troy (Feb. 1), Georgia State (Feb. 8), South Alabama (Feb. 12) and Louisiana-Lafayette (Feb. 15). The remainder of the Red Wolves’ home conference schedule includes Western Kentucky (Feb. 5), UT-Arlington (Feb. 19), Texas State (Feb. 22), ULM (March 5) and the Ragin’ Cajuns (March 8). The 2014 Sun Belt Conference schedule features a double round-robin format for the second consecutive year consisting of 18 games with conference members playing each other twice. The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will take place in New Orleans, La., March 12-15. The top eight league finishers will make the tournament, which will begin with quarterfinals action March 12. The semifinals will be played March 14, with the championship game to be played March 15. Starting times for all ASU’s 2013-14 regular-season contests will be announced at a later date.
