~ A Step In The Right Direction ~ With all artists, I feel there are times when they feel they need to expand, and I am no different. I have grown tired of trying to emulate all the work that our ancestors have done. I feel its not the work I need to be doing, and I feel that it has been done by my predecessors. Imitating has become tiresome, and I feel its time to emerge as my own artist, and fuse all my art understanding with technique and form. While I will always use my work for its traditional purposes and use it to give life to our ceremonies. I will never stop using my art to empower our people in keeping our stories and traditions alive, but its time for me to grow. This piece came to be in the beginning of this discovery. I felt like I was unable to do these things because they werent proper or what the art is supposed to look like. There are rules to these art form, and to break them is to break tradition. However, our people were adaptable, and were constantly open to evolution, and that is what I want to start working towards. Innovation of new concepts and merging them with the art world that surrounds us all. We are not the same people living on the coast, living off the land and living in our traditional homes. We are only imitating our ancestors, and we need to start telling our stories of now, and this is what Im going to start doing. I have spent thousands of house learning from teachers who have mastered this art, and they all told me the same thing.
