A Summer Solstice posting from seasoned Acupuncturist, Matthew Bauer, L.Ac....thank you Matthew! Happy Solstice everybody! Today is the Summer Solstice and marks the beginning of summer in the West and the middle of summer in the East. Most people today think of the Summer Solstice as the longest day of the year which is true, but in ancient time the significance of the Solstice days were not about the length of the day but rather the fact that the sun, rising on the Eastern horizon, stopped moving along that horizon when it rose staying in one spot for a few days. Some of you know that I have written about how the observation of the sun, moon, stars and planets played a large role in the development of the theories behind Chinese medicine and the Solstices were an important part of that. The Solstice spots on the Eastern horizon marked the extremes to the sun’s travels and helped inspire the concepts of yin and yang and how to measure or contrast everything in nature based on their relationship to yin and yang. Hope you are enjoying this “sun stand still” day.
