A THURSDAY TWOFER... (1) Do you know a YOUNG UNITED METHODIST MINISTER or someone who does? Or maybe are you one. Heres a GREAT OPPORTUNITY for anyone who fits that description. The Center for Courage & Renewal is offering a superb program called The Courage to Lead for young (under 35) United Methodist ministers. The program is open to anyone serving in a pastoral role—ordained or not—as well as ordained or ordination-track clergy in ANY ministry setting. The program will be offered in three cities to make access easy across the U.S. And thanks to generous grants from the United Methodist Church and the Lilly Endowment, the COST IS AMAZINGLY LOW! The DEADLINE for applications is JANUARY 30, and a few spaces are still available. Details and registration forms are at tinyurl/l8tlbyb. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD! I founded the Center for Courage & Renewal twenty years ago. I know all the good folks who are leading this program, and I guarantee it will be great! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (2) Heres a little something for those of you who dont know any young Methodist ministers! Its a 1.5 minute recording of me reading a piece on hope—a vital virtue in our time—by Victoria Safford. The words come from an essay Safford wrote for The Nation, though I regard them as a beautiful prose poem. My reading came at the end of an hour-long On Being interview I recently did with Krista Tippett and Courtney Martin. More about that soon to come... P.S. The entire text of Saffords essay is at tinyurl/mqhlw6a. The recording, image and music were put together by Maria Popova of Brain Pickings at brainpickings.org/.
