A TREEFUL OF CHRISMONS LAMB OF GOD December 8 When John the Baptist first saw Jesus, he proclaimed, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.” John was the wilderness prophet, sent to be the one who prepared the way for the Messiah. Many were expecting a fiery militant leader to lead the people of Israel to a time of power and glory. John saw something different. He saw in the humble person of Jesus a different kind of Savior, one who came to his people with the gentleness of a lamb. The ancient symbol of the Lamb with the banner of St. George’s Cross behind it reminds us that Christ promises God’s victory over the world, but not with mighty force. He comes to us as the one who offers the complete sacrifice of himself as a way of showing how far God will go to love us and unite us with himself. In the ancient communion service, the prayer before the communion is called the “Agnus Dei,” which echo John’s words. “Lamb of God, have mercy upon us. Lamb of God, grant us your peace.” This Lamb of God reminds us also that the Good Shepherd comes to gather all the lambs together, and to bring them safely home. HAIKU How gently he comes, So that no one should fear him-- Behold the Lamb of God.
