A Three Hour Tour Matthew 8:24-27 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. 27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” Russell Johnson, “the Professor” of Gilligan’s Island fame, passed away this week. I couldn’t help but sing this modified version of the Gilligan’s Island tune, in my head, during Sunday School this morning as we read this passage from Matthew. “The weather started getting rough and the tiny ship was tossed, if not for courage of the fearless Jesus, the fishing boat would be lost, the fishing boat would be lost.” I got to thinking about this classic “disciples of little faith” example in the bible. What if it wasn’t an example of the disciples exhibiting little faith but of them trying to solve a problem based on their past experiences and when all else fails, they turned to the master. These “fishers of men” were seasoned fishermen. This wasn’t their maiden voyage in a boat. They knew what to do when a storm came up. They had this! But this wasn’t an ordinary storm and when they had exhausted every possible measure to secure their safety and it was not working, they turned to Jesus. So Jesus, who was sleeping, sheepishly opens his eyes and in a dry sense of humor, with a smirk says, “you of little faith, why are you so afraid? Watch this! How many times do we think we can take care of the problem without asking the master? We don’t need to bother Jesus. We got this! So we go about trying to solve the problem on our own but problem doesn’t go away and only gets worse and finally we throw our hands up and say, “Jesus take the wheel!” I don’t know about you but for me it is not about a lack of faith but more about trying to take care of the problem myself. I know, as a person who strives to lead a Christian life, that Jesus can take care of any problem. This I know for the bible tells me so! Im just leaving Jesus out of the equation, until I run out of options, because I have faith in him being there for me whenever I need him. What I need to remember and maybe what these verses are trying to say to me is; do not wait until I can’t solve the problem on my own but bring Jesus into the equation in the beginning.
