A Tribute to Dolphy: A Depiction of the Filipino Poverty The King of “Laughter and Tears” has already succumbed to death. The person who was able to eased up the “Pain and Agony” of the Filipino people composed of almost 95% myriad poor who are used to penury, unbearable living condition, contaminated dwelling, contaminated water and nourishment. If our Overseas Filipino Workers are the tranquilizer of the Philippine economy, Rodolfo Vera Quizon, Sr. is the opium and morphine of the myriad poor for the past eight (8) decades or so; instantly incising the tumor of poverty among our people the moment he commence his “Comedy and Tragedy” depicting the true situation of the Philippines as a nation and people. “Dolphy” as the majority masses call him, tells the truth as depicted in his movies and sitcoms, “John and Marsha” – depicting the idleness and inutility of the Filipino people against the adversities of life and the inability to develop into as a strong nation, “Home Along the Riles” – depicting the sorry state and unabated Diaspora of informal settlers in the metropolis due to extreme poverty in the countryside and “Home Along the Airport” and “Home Along the River” – depicting the un-curtailed situation of the majority of the poor thriving in the metropolis as they live in shanties and makeshifts infested with rodents, mosquito, cockroaches, and any other insects unimaginable; and in the end depicts how we cling on to God to let our lives a little better and survive from day to day, with persistence just to wake up to see a new dawn, heading to an abyss of nowhere. Yes, most of his friends whom he somehow aided and helped during the days of struggles in life, the business oligarchs whom he made millions to land in their coppers, and political harlequins whom he tried to put into power knows too well that he has a lingering ailment for the past five (5) years or so, but no one offered the “Fountain of Youth” only the filthy and cunning rich and powerful can afford – The Embryonic Stem or a less grade, The Placental Stem Cell at least. Were there filthy and cunning friends spear headed for a movement to restore his precious life and National Treasure caliber back to fitness? Filipinos are good of rigmaroles and superlative salutations when a person is already dead. Have our employers and bosses have had at least mustered enough courage to visit us at the hospital due to ailment or illnesses, or perhaps visit our cadaver at our wake when we are already dead? Much worst, we used dead people to advance our selfish aggrandizement, motivation, interest, and perhaps to further enhance the maximization of profit and wealth. I lament with tears the passing of a tranquilizer and temporary antidote to our suffering and penury; the passing of a man who himself was once upon a time part and parcel of that irony and predicament – sharing the so called contaminated food of chocolate colored porridge and dried fish by the rich, without using spoon and passing the bowl from mouth to mouth. In behalf of the myriad poor in this country, I shed tears for your passing Sir Dolphy, the “Poor Man’s Comedy Is Dead,” and, comedy and laughter will never be the same again! Though, you will always remain fresh and verdant in our memories. Dr. Delmar Topinio Taclibon, July 13, 2012, 7:45am
