A U.S. Marine was smartly walking on a sidewalk in the CPO housing area at a Naval base one morning, when he happened across a five year old sitting near the street. The lad appeared to have collected as much doggie doo as he could find in the neighborhood and was busy kneading it and rolling it, as if he was playing with some childrens molding clay. Slightly taken aback, the Marine asked the boy what he was doing. Im making me a Chief, replied the tot. With that, the Marine broke out in bodacious laughter; slapping his knee, and reveling in the response. Seeing two other Marines approaching, he shouted out to them, calling the two over to join him. Ask the kid what hes doing, the now chuckling Marine told his compatriots. Curious of their friends mirth, one of the pair asked the boy, Hey, kid, what are you doing there? Without stopping his labor, the child replied again, Im making me a Chief Upon hearing this, the three were beside themselves, laughing and scratching, and thoroughly enjoying the moment. Seeing their outrageous behavior, there among the CPO houses, a gruff old Master Chief approached them and asked what the hell was going on. One Marine, who had first spoken with the child, piped up, Ask the kid what hes doing, Master Chief. The Master Chief, taking it in stride, slowly turned to the youngster and asked, Billy Smith, just what on Gods green earth are you doing? Im making me a Chief, came the response once again. The three Marines couldnt contain themselves and really busted loose with howls of laughter, coming close to being in tears while observing the Master Chiefs reaction. With a little snarl aimed at the trio of revelers, the Master Chief turned again to the lad and calmly inquired, And just why are you making yourself a Chief, young Mr. Smith? while the laughter continued. The lad stopped, brushed some of the excess doo from his hands, stood tall before the Master Chief and sounded off, Cause I aint got enough shit to make a Marine!
