A U T O N O M Y M Y N Y A S H: Local governments have long been seeking autonomy but, there is nothing like absolute autonomy even among sovereign nations. Bilateral and multilateral ties exist with appropriate laws to regulate them. Checks and balances are realized where laws specify the boundaries and starting points of obligations of the different organs and tiers of government. Agitation for autonomy by local govts is unfortunate and unrealistic. Many local govts in Akwa Ibom State are unviable today because their chairmen borrowed huge sums of money that leave perennial liability. On this note, a law should be enacted, if there wasnt any, that state governments should be the guarantor for loans obtained by local govts and that in an event of default in payment, such loans would be paid back from source in a manner that would not render the local govt unviable.
