A UFO in the Sky? A big storm erupted some years back, when someone noticed a strange object in the sky in Ghirlandaios painting of the Madonna with St Giovannino. A man on a ledge in the background seemed to be shielding his eyes from the sun, and looking up at it, while his dog looks the other way. The object was not added later, and had been painted by Ghirlandaio with great care and detail, so it had certainly been done deliberately, and clearly had meaning. It was suggested at the time that this was evidence of a visitation by aliens, and that the object was a UFO. I love stories like this. Not because I believe in alien visitations, but because it upsets the high priests of art. There is nothing more delightful to see, in my view, than a bunch of indignant old farts huffing and puffing about something they themselves cant explain, and which - therefore - technically - in this case, IS an unidentified flying object. But I don;t think it is that sort of UFO. Do I not believe in aliens, then? Frankly, any scientist worth his salt, knowing that there are as many stars in our galaxy as there are grains of sand on all the beaches of Earth put together, and as many galaxies out there as there are stars in our own galaxy, will have concluded that it is incomprehensible that life has not gotten going elsewhere in the universe. But has an alien ship visited Earth while mankind has been around? I rather doubt it, and I certainly dont think that Ghirlandaios painting depicts one. It was no afterthought, no incidental detail. Apart from its prominence and detail, he even shaped the Madonnas halo to look like a long finger pointing at the object, and labelled the finger Ghirlandaio. And then he tells us exactly what it is. There are letters on it. And they tell us not only what it is, but that it is what the ENTIRE painting is all about...
