A Union member died myrant12.blogspot/2014/01/normal-0-false-false-false-en-us-x-none.html [By Michael Hoyt] Don’t like unions? There are 22 so called right to work states in this country and at present, Missouri and Indiana are also considering right to work laws and in 2011 a bill was introduced into the United States senate to establish a national right to work law. Right to work laws, simply stated, say that you cannot be compelled to belong to a union as a condition of employment. Many refer to these as “Right to work (for less.) Right to work laws weaken the bargaining power of unions. Employees that don’t belong to unions still receive the benefits of unions without having any of their own skin in the game. Right to work laws allow companies to pay lower wages and fewer benefits while increasing profits tenfold. I live in Arizona, a “Right to Work” state. Many a time have I heard people in this state, (working people-people that I work with-people that could be making more and having better benefits in a union shop,) go on and on about how much they hate unions and how they love right to work laws. As long as people have been able to conceive of unions and collective bargaining men and women have fought and many have just for the right to belong to a union. Here are just a few of the things unions have won: The right to belong to a union. Collective bargaining. A livable wage. Insurance through your employer or union. Safe working conditions. Child labor laws. Protection from being unfairly disciplined. (Fired) 40 hour work week. Vacation time. Not to mention lobbying congress to pass laws favorable to working people around the country and much—much more. For every advancement that unions have made for the people, some union member-maybe your dad, maybe your granddad or mother or grandmother has fought and many have died for you, the working people.
