A Variety of Promises, Part 2 Numbers 30:2 KJV If a man vow a vow unto the Lord, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth. (3) Be careful of excessive devotion. It is possible to feel so excited and happy before the Lord that we say foolish things that we cannot live up to. Rash talk, delayed fulfillment, and hasty promises are described as the sacrifice of fools (Ecclesiastes 5:1-7). The mouth can be a cause of sin and a source of destruction in our lives, so its worth heeding the warning, Let your words be few (5:2). (4) Words are cheap; actions are what count. We dont have to be Old Testament believers paying vows of animals and lands to fall into the sin of broken promises. As Christians, we may talk a good game of faith, yet live in a way that contradicts our words. Instead, we should put feet on our faith by such actions as caring for the poor and disadvantage and showing fair treatment to others (James 1:27-2:26). We can join the psalmist in praying: Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, and I shall be innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:13-14. SOME THINGS PEOPLE PROMISED GOD Jacob (Genesis 28:20-22). Promised to make the Lord his God and to tithe his possessions if God would supply his needs. The nation of Israel (Numbers 21:2). Promised complete destruction of the Canaanite cities of Hormah if God would guarantee victory. Jephthah (Judges 11:30-31). Promised to sacrifice as a burnt offering whatever came out of his house to meet him if God would grant him victory over the Ammonites (his daughter). Hannah (1 Samuel 1:10-11). Promised to dedicate her son to Gods service if He would give her one. David (Psalms 132:1-5). Promised not to sleep until he found a dwelling place for the Lord. Absalom (2 Samuel 15:7-8). Promised (supposedly) that he would serve the Lord if He would return him to Jerusalem. Thank You, Heavenly Father, for forgiveness when we make rash decisions and vows. Help us Father to walk worthy of our deliverance and calling in You. Help us to stay focus and mindful of all our actions and words, in Jesus name, Amen. PMS---Pray, Meditate, Study Gods Word daily. One of the most important places where Gods people need to keep their word is the workplace. Have a great day! Gods Servant
