A View from the Podium by Paul Hilliam Saturday 22nd November 2014 Remembering the Fallen In many ways this was one of the very best concerts given by Rutland Sinfonia in recent years. The performance of Butterworth’s rhapsody ‘A Shrophire Lad’ benefited from an outing early this year - its sweeping themes were shaped with depth of emotion and there was some wonderful quiet playing at the start and end of the work. Many people would have come especially to hear Elgar’s Cello Concerto with Eduardo Vassallo making his second appearance as soloist with the orchestra (and his first as our new Musical Patron). The concerto never fails to move me regardless of how many times I hear it or conduct it – and there’s always so much to discover in the work. Eduardo was a joy to rehearse with and his personality shown through in his playing. We look forward to his next visit. The Vaughan Williams Symphony – No 3, known as the ‘Pastoral’ was new to most people in the orchestra and possibly in the audience too. The orchestral playing from everyone was outstanding, but the highlight was Paul Dovey’s off stage trumpet solo and Marian Porter’s wordless singing beautifully capturing the desolation of trenches. The nobility of the symphony’s last movement in particular provided a fitting tribute to the fallen.
