A WORD FOR TODAY October, 8 God Is Your Shield "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want... Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me" (Psalm 23:1,4). David relates how God protects us to the way the Shepherd protects his sheep. Remember that David was a Shepherd before the Lord chose him to be the king over Israel. He knew about the passion that propels the Shepherd to provide for his sheep and protect them from predators at all cost. He remembered how he fought a lion and bear to save just one of his sheep. The sheep are always at rest in the assurance of their Shepherd’s protection and provision. Some years ago, I heard a very beautiful testimony. A man was driving with his son at the backseat of the car. The man wasn’t aware that the little boy had started fiddling with the door. Suddenly, the door opened while the car was on the freeway at high speed and the boy fell out. The man slammed his brakes and the car screeched to a halt. He jumped out of the car shouting and praying, “God, please keep my baby alive.” Many other cars had stopped as well to help the man and his son. When the man got to his boy, he discovered that he was unhurt. Relieved, he carried the boy and was on his way back to his car. The driver of the car that was right behind his car when the boy fell out ran to the boy’s father, looking as though he had just seen a ghost! The man wanted to apologise for the trouble he caused but before he could say anything the driver said, “You don’t understand. The truth of the matter is I didn’t even apply my brakes. It all happened so quickly and I didn’t have time to hit the brakes. My car just stopped!” What a miracle! Who stopped the oncoming car? Who applied the brakes? Nobody has to tell you God was involved, it couldn’t have been by luck or coincidence. God is indeed your refuge and your shield to protect you from harm. You don’t have to be afraid of trouble or harm coming from any angle. You have a mighty shield all around you. Be conscious of His presence today. PASTOR ANITA
