A Word of Defense How can we protect ourselves from the power of words, and guard against speaking destructively to others? The best way is to immerse ourselves in God’s Word both in Spirit and in Scripture. In Spirit? By putting on Christ, understanding He is our very life and operating from that love relationship. This relationship is our strong tower and shield of faith that extinguishes every fiery dart. In Scripture? By learning the language of heaven: knowing Him in the Spirit comes by discerning Him as the living Word behind the text. When we know the real, the counterfeit is easy to discern. And we can dismantle counterfeit and destructive words we unwittingly receive today, have received in the past, or are tempted to speak by asking God to do so through revelation of the cross where we died with Christ to the past, to the world, to sin, and are alive to Him in His peace that passes understanding. We can cancel any destructive words spoken to us the minute we hear them. We should not entertain them at all. Isaiah 54:17 says, “no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD."
