A beautiful -- and spot-on -- reflection on the life and legacy of Paul Schell. He was one of three Seattle mayors that I had the great privilege of working with and for. Among his many, many visionary moves, Mayor Schell, in partnership with two terrific City Council members at the time ( Heidi Wills and Richard Conlin) created the Seattle Office of Sustainability & Environment in 2000. He was one of the first few mayors to see the need, and the opportunity; now hundreds, perhaps thousands, of cities have such a position. I will never forget flying in a small float plane with Mayor Schell and his wonderful wife Pam, from Lake Union to Whistler, British Columbia, to compare notes on urban sustainability with mayors from throughout the Cascadia bio-region. He didnt necessarily need me at his side for that meeting, but he wanted me to have the experience. My thoughts today are with his family and friends, and the thousands of others who, like me, got to spend some time in his impressive orbit.
