Forensic Linguistics Definitions: Forensic linguistics is the application of linguistic knowledge, methods and insights to the forensic context of law, language, crime investigation, trial, and judicial procedure. It is the name given to a number of sub-disciplines within applied linguistics, and which relate to the interface between language, the law and crime. The range of topics is diverse: from the analysis of confessions to the language rights of ethnic minorities, from the assessment of threat in a ransom demand, to determining the genuineness of a suicide note. As a professional discipline it’s only been organized for about 15-20 years, but linguists have individually been working in this area for many more years, generally somewhat in isolation. Core Areas: • Authorship analysis • Phonetic Voice Identification • Investigative Interviewing Techniques • Language in the Courtroom • Protection of the Rights of Vulnerable Witnesses Most of the work forensic linguists do involves the second and third views of language “As a window into the mind” and “As a vehicle for communication and social interaction” Forensic linguistics draws from other academic disciplines: -anthropology -psychology -sociology -education -statistics Like experts in other forensic sciences, linguists look for patterns and inconsistencies in patterns Application in the Courtroom Linguists bring their expertise to stand on their case during trials Linguistic examiners analyze and compare applicable elements of the specific communications It includes vocabulary choice, syntax, phrase, spelling, style, format, sentence length, punctuation, intonation, pitch, rate of speech, voice quality, etc. Discourse analysis is also applies when the analysis of conversations are recorded on audio or videotape that is used as evidence in court This is to facilitate accurate listening or accurate understanding regarding what is said in the recording Scope According to Forensic Linguist, Dr. Carole, Forensic Linguistics applies the theories and builds analytical methods of linguistics to question the civil, criminal, and security investigations. In addition, Forensic Linguists are involved in areas that relate to crime, both solving crime and assisting wrongly accused people.
